AB - Through analyzing physical features, this study attempts to ascertain the approximate date of making the Avatamska Sutras(華嚴經) found from the inside of Amitabha statue(阿彌陀佛) of Gaeunsa(開運寺) in Seoul. As a result, it is found that all the Sutras of Gaeunsa have 17 characters per line, the same as other existing Sutras, but most of them have 26 lines per sheet. Since the Sutra was produced in scroll form with 26 lines per sheet and letters in the manuscript style, and its heading appeared in only one line, it could be estimated to be made in the 9th or 10th century. With this criteria, at least 4 volumes of the Avatamska Sutras are assumed to be made in the late Silla Dynasty, and considered as valuable as the National Treasures. The other 13 volumes are presumed to be made in the 12th century in the Goryo Dynasty.
