ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the features and cultural values of the relics housed in Chungyeolsa in Chungju. The major findings are as follows:(1) A great general Im Gyeongeop, Chungmingong, was born in Pung-dong, Chungju. He was a person close to Ming Dynasty, but against Qing Dynasty. Chungyeolsa was a shrine to commemorate him, and its memorial hall was also built in 1978 when Chungryeolsa was reconstructed. (2) The relics that Chungyeolsa contains are related, directly and indirectly, with the general Im Gyeongeop.. They are all 54 pieces of 52 kinds, including one piece of one kind of ironwork, 3 pieces of 3 kinds of stoneworks, 7 pieces of 7 kinds of woodworks, and 43 pieces of 41 kinds of paperworks. (3) The three relics, <Eojedalcheon-Chungyeolsa-bi>, <Churyeon-do> and <The portrait of Chungmingong Im Gyeongeop> are designated as the tangible cultural properties or cultural materials of Chungcheongbuk-do. (4) Since other relics like <The virtuous memorial stone of Mrs. Im Gyeongeop, Wansan Lee>, <The woodblocks of Imjanggunjeon>, <The hall signboard of Chungju Chungyeolsa>, <A set of old documental materials about Im Gyeongeop> and <A set of book collections about Im Gyeongeop> also represent the general Im’s patriotism and loyalty, it is proper to designate and manage them as local cultural properties.
