A Study on Systems and Bibliographic Characteristics of the Printed Books of Chunhyangjeon

ABSTRACT

Chunhyangjeon has been handed down for ages being transformed into various forms and contents in the socio-economical changes of the late Joseon Dynasty. The result showed that the total 143 types and 286 books, like 88 types of 110 manuscript books, 25 types of 86 block books, 30 types of 90 printed books were identified. Among these, the bibliographic list of the total 90 types and 183 books, like 42 types and 54 manuscript books, 19 types of 47 block books, 29 types and 82 printed books was made, and its status was analyzed by time. Based on the above, The formation and development process of Chunhyangjeon was divided into the five stages and their respective characteristics were explained. Especially, the period from 1880's to 1910's when rental books and block books of Chunhyangjeon were activated and new lead printed books were settled could be the heyday of manufacture and circulation of Chunhyangjeon. The manuscript of Chunhyangjeon was divided into 28 types and 28 books in the Korean version, 5 types and 16 books in the Chinese one, and 9 types and 9 books in the mixed Korean and Chinese ones by their marking way. The block book of Chunhyangjeon was divided into 7 types and 17 books of Seoul version, 9 types and 26 books of Jeonju version, and 3 types and 4 books of Anseong version according to their published place. The printed book of Chunhyangjeon was divided into 19 types and 37 books in the Korean version, 5 types and 31 books in the Chinese one, and 4 types and 11 books in the mixed Korean and Chinese ones by their marking way. It is certain that they will be contribute to the analysis on characteristics of transcription and publication, circulation and a class of readers of classical novels in the late Joseon Dynasty.
