A Study on the Textual & Critical Notes in the Juseobaekseon

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze on the textual and critical notes in the Juseobaekseon(「朱書百選」). The major findings are as follows:(1) Juseobaekseon is a kind of Confucian book compiled from the Chu-tzu’s messages. The King Jeongjo directly selected about a hundred of Chu-tzu’s messages which were included in the book to revive great literary spirits and to realize the policy of respecting learning. (2) Lee Man-Su(李晩秀), Han Man-Yu(韓晩裕), Choi Gwang-Tae(崔光泰) and Lee Si-Won(李始源) who were civil minsters, scholars in the reign of the King Jeongjo had textual and critical studies on Juseobaekseon. They studied 311 headings and 329 items, and added headnotes to them such as figures, places, commentaries, sources, writings, quotations, opinions, questions, unknownness, etc. (3) Each headnote contains many elements: names, courtesy names, pen names, one's ancestral home, family relations, masters, positions, honorific titles, posthumous names, fellows, periods of activities, works in the notes ‘figures’; the locations of places and mountains in the notes ‘places’; family lines, corrections, habitations, public posts, social intercourses, arguments, discussions, pavilions, factions, criticisms, affairs, the titles of works, informal terms, etc. in the notes ‘commentaries’; sources of the titles, terminologies in the notes ‘sources’; the periods, authors and regions of writings in the notes ‘writings’; citations of original texts or sources in the notes ‘quotations’; other references in the notes ‘cross reference or opinions’; personal names, writing errors, various facts in the notes ‘questions’; unknown or unidentified name in the notes ‘unknownness’.
