ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine King Jeongjo's reading behavior based on the citation analysis of Hongjaejeonseo. King Jeongjo, who regarded himself both a Goonsa(君師, lord and teacher at the same time) and a teacher, mastered a wide range of books covering Neo-Confucian books which mainly include Confucian classics, books of the Hundred Schools of Thought (e.g. Buddhism, Taoism, Legalism, etc.) and practical books (e.g. Military Strategy, Medicine, Agriculture, etc.). His reading behavior was noteworthy as it suggested that he held on to authentic Confucianism, but he also showed a reformist tendency of poring over practical books to resolve realistic issues.
