A Study on Early Typography of Yohozi Edition and Kotetsusyoin Edition in Japan

ABSTRACT

(1) Yohozi edition refers to seventeen editions printed in wooden type at Yohozi temple in Kyoto from 1600 to around 1643. Kotetsusyoin edition refers to six editions printed in wooden type at Kotetsusyoin located in the suburb area of Kyoto between 1604 and 1608. (2) The type was made of wood. The type-making technique reflects script writing style, yet its quality is not sophisticated. Some types were added later. Its technical quality is around upper-middle grade. (3) The typesetting technique shows evenly aligned vertical and lateral stripes of character trace, yet there is a substantial variation in the trace of small characters. The extent of skewedness varies across characters and the tone of ink color is highly inconsistent. Its technical quality is around middle-middle grade. (4) The brushing technique shows certain inconsistency in the thickness of ink color and spreads of chinese ink, and there are some incidental touches of ink and double printing. Its technical quality is around middle-middle grade. (5) The type printing quality is around middle-middle grade, with no specific distinction.
