AB - This paper aims to organize the marks written in gakpil in the Volume twelve to twenty of the AvatamsakaSutra owned by Todaiji Library, which was transcribed in the middle of the 8th century, and to report the over all features of the marks to the academic community. It shall directly prove the marks used in understanding or reciting the texts in the middle of the 8th century and their specific roles respectively. To begin with, the marks written in gakpil in the AvatamsakaSutra can be classified into two categories: the marks related to the texts, which includes Hap-bu(合符, marks for the aggregation), Hundok-bu(訓讀符, marks for rendering Chinese writing into Korea), Sangryak-bu(省略符, apostrophe), Sakje-bu(削除符, marks for elimination), and the ones to the recitation, comprised of Seongjeom(聲點, marks for the “Four Tones” of classical Chinese) and Beompae-bu(梵唄符, marks for the Buddhist chants). Amongst the marks, it is confirmed that the relations of the starting point of Beompae-bu to Seongjeom cannot be contradicted in case of Pyeongseongja(平聲字), after the examination of the possible relations suggested in the existing discussion. There also exist the undeciphered marks, however, there is a possibility that a few of them could be the ones for the translation and reading. Based on the examination on each mark, it is ascertained that the location and the form of the marks do not show the pattern of one-to-one correspondence to the indicating function of the marks in the AvatamsakaSutra owned by Todaiji Library.
