ABSTRACT

This study differentiated the system of the ‘royal certificate granted to the secondary meritorious subjects by the king’ (Wonjong Gongsin Nokgwon, 原從功臣錄券) in the early Joseon dynasty into the heading, the main text, the closing, and explored the characteristics of the compilation of the each part. The heading consists of; the title of the heading and the titles/names of the grantees. The main text in general consists of; the date of the King’s order regarding the installation of the meritorious subjects, the title/name of the person who received the King’s order on the installation, the statement of the King on the reason of the royal certificate grant, the titles/names of the meritorious subjects by class, the date of the receiving the King’s order for the enforcement of the award, the title/name of the person who received the King’s order on the award and the statement of the King on the award regulation and privileges of the meritorious subjects by class. The closing consists of; the name of the institution which enforced the grant and the title/family-names/full-names of the government officials belonging to the institution. Some royal certificates have signatures. It has been confirmed by the result of this study that the royal certificate systems were similar in general; however, there were some differences dependent on the grant date or the institution which enforced the grant.
