ABSTRACT

This research investigates the background of writing Sinpyeon Jejong Gyojang Chongnok and its bibliographic description. The findings are as follows: First, an investigation of the background of writing Sinpyeon Jejong Gyojang Chongnok shows that ① Uicheon aimed to promote Byddhism around the world by collecting all researches on Buddhism in East Asia, compiling them into Gyojang Chongnok as a bibliography, publishing and transmitting Jejong Gyojang as ‘the 4th Jang’ permanently along with the ‘Three Jangs’, that is, Buddhist Scriptures, Commandments, and Commentaries, and ② Uicheon had a belief in that only the comprehensive study of Jejong enabled people to perceive and understand fully Buddha’s teaching and ideology. Second, an analysis of the elements of Gyojang Chongnok’s bibliographic description demonstrates that ① Gyojang Chongnok adopted an excellent bibliographic method of entering separately the first line which could be compared with the modern bibliographic style of ‘heading the first line’, and ② Gyojang Chongnok pioneered the innovative bibliographic entries of describing Buddishist researches by using the ‘title main entry’ already in the 11th century. In modern cataloging rules and the ISBD, only in the late 20th century the title main entry replaced the author main entry. It is confirmed that the bibliographic description of Gyojang Chongnok was designed to maximize the simplicity and clear understanding of each entry, and its creativity and excellence should be appreciated as the bibliographic landmark in the world.
