A Study on the Tools used by Engravers around 1850

ABSTRACT

Uigwes are an elementary book sources to identify the activities of engravers. Many uigwes include contents about engravers; lists of engravers, awards, used tools, etc. Recently, as restoration of wood blocks are carried out for special printed books and traditional works of engraving are reproduced at several places, it is needed to study on the tools used by engravers for describing traditional engraving works precisely. This study based on the five type of books, Gukjobogam-uigwe, Gukjangdogam-uigwe, Seonwonboryaksujeong-uigwe, Jonhodogam-uigwe, Silrokcheong-uigwe written around 1850, especially focus on the kinds of tools used by engravers. Major result of this study is revealed the fact that the basic tools used by engravers in Joseon Dynasty were graving knife, table, whetstone, pig bristles and earthenware saucer. And another fact that stone engravers used much more supplies than the others also become clear.
