ABSTRACT

This study deals with classical novels for rental which Kyoto University has in Japan. The classical novels for rental which Kyoto University has in Japan were collected by Kawai Hirodami [河合弘民, 1873-1918] from Gyeongseong (present Seoul) in 1907 when he was appointed as a teacher and assistant administrator in Gyeongseong Branch School of Dongyang Association Technical School. His collected editions we can find now are total 11 kinds and 28 pieces. He bought them in Ahyeon Book Rental Shop located in Ahyeon-dong of Gyeongseong (Seoul) then. The classical novels for rental include Geumhyangjeonggi, Gimssihyohaengrok, Namjeongpalnangi, Baekhakseonjeon, Samoksamjujeon, Janggukjinjeon, Jangbaekjeon, Janghanjeolhyogi, Jeonunchijeon, Jegalmuhujeon, and Jingsebitaerok, and among them, the originals of three kinds, Baekhakseonjeon, Jangbaekjeon, and Jegalmuhujeon, are only found in Kyoto University. The classical novels for rental in Kyoto University are not very different from rental books found in other book rental shops in Gyeongseong (Seoul) from the late 19th until the early 20th century in their looks. They give us a variety of information, for example, thick covers and inners used to bind the books to reduce damage while being rent, emptying one letter or two on the last line to prevent the damage of text, scribbles made by those renting the books, and information about the book rental shops. Therefore, we can say that the looks of the classical novels for rental existing then were quite typical. However, the rental books of Ahyeon book rental shops found in Kyoto University are characterized by that they brought banggakbon novels and bound and transcribed them as two to three pieces for rental. This reveals a crucial fact that those book rental shops made rental books on their own, but they also used banggakbon previously made to operate a book rental shop. This helps us understand their relationship with those making banggakbon who admitted the way. This study is going to deal with the contents in order.
