ABSTRACT

This paper is to examine printing culture of Wanyeong in the 17th century to 18th century using 112 kinds of books listed in the 14 categories of Chekpan Mokrok, and to search for the variety of Wanyeong printing. The findings can be summarized as follows. First, this paper discusses the trend of Wanyeong printing culture in the 17th and 18th centuries. While 39 kinds of Wanyeong printing were published in the 17th century, 73 kinds of it were published in the 18th century, a huge increase. In the 17th century, most of Wanyeong books were collections of works of specific writers. But, in the next century, various kinds of books were published in various fields. In particular, publication of personal collections of works increased in the 1680s mainly because of publication of such books by dignitaries of the Noron Faction appointed as Governors of Jeolla provinces in the 17th century. In the 18th century, publication of such books increased in the 1710s and 1770s. However, except for the cases where such books were published by the royal order, publication of such books by private scholars began to increase in the latter part of the 17th century until the early part of the 18th century. But, from that time, the number of such books kept decreasing, disappearing since the mid-18th century. Because of that, publication of anthologies by big families and seowon became active. And, high government officials would publish their collections of works using metal types. Next, this paper deals with variety of printing culture using Wanyeong printing. Jachitonggam, Jujadaejeon, and Dongeuibogam are representative books printed by Wanyeong. Since they were published by the royal order in the 17th century, they were repeatedly reprinted afterwards. Book prints have been kept up to now. But, there has been no research on when, in what situations, and how those books were printed. It is expected that if the findings of this research about the situations where those books were published are connected with remaining wood blocks, they will provide various sources on Wanyeong printing culture.
