AB - In the prehistoric times, communication and cultural succession had been carried out mainly through word of mouth and objects before letters were created. Although the origins of the East Asian characters cannot be found exactly, they can be assumed as the original forms of Hadonakseo(河圖洛書), Gyeolseung(結繩), Seogye(書契) and Palgwae(八卦). Since those types of letters were created, history could be recorded in East Asia. Sangseo(尙書), which is regarded as the origin of prose having historical text, is the oldest official document and the oldest Confucian classic book in the East Asia.
It has been studied in many countries from ancient times to the present. Because it is worthy of being the oldest record having the origins of the ancient people and nations of East Asia, the studies of Sangseo have been performed in various fields, such as philosophy, history, linguistics, archeology and bibliography in Korea, China and Japan, etc.
The bibliographical study on the authenticity of the historical statement with the existing literature of Sangseo has been done in China, and the study on the different versions and commentaries of Sangseo has been performed in Japan. However, only philosophy, history, and linguistics have been studied in Korea. Due to this, the bibliographical study on the formation and variation of Sangseo has not been considered yet.
In this research paper, the origin and the information of different versions and commentaries of Sangseo were studied. In addition, the history of imported and printed books of Sangseo, which has authorized collections of commentaries, such as Sangseojeongui(尙書正義) of Tang Dynasty, Seojibjeon(書集傳) of Song Dynasty, Seojeondaejeon(書傳大全) of Ming Dynasty and Sangseojuso (尙書注疏) of Qing Dynasty, was been studied for the comparative studies between Korea and other countries in East Asia.
