Comparison Study of the Distribution Copy of the Bibliograph, Four Teachings of the Cheontae Sect - focus on Haeinsa Junggakbon, Gibokdogambon, Daejeongjangbon -

ABSTRACT

Buddhist monk Jegwan(諦觀, ?-973 ?) during King Gwangjong(光宗) of Goryeo, and he published the Four Teachings of the Cheontae Sect(天台四敎儀) at Jeongyoweon(傳敎院) in Cheontae Mountain during his 10-year stay (961-973) as the envoy of King Gwangjong. The Four Teachings of the Cheontae Sect is an introductory and opening letter of Cheontae which features books introducing the deployment and development of early Buddhist schools of Early․Hīnayāna․Mahāyāna Buddhism, philosophies of Madhyamika․Yogācāra schools, and philosophy of Hwaum․Esoteric since Cheontae Zhiyi(智顗, 538-597). The Four Teachings of the Cheontae Sect complied 73 commentaries in China, Korea and Japan, and 132 different Commentary were released. This study introduces the Four Teachings of the Cheontae Sect from China, Korea and Japan, their Buddhist paragraphs and commentaries investigated and researched from the Goryeo-gyojang Collection and DB Establishment Project since 2012, and reviewed the Jegwan’s original intention through comparing and researching the different copies of the Four Teachings of the Cheontae Sect which underwent different interpretations while being distributed and passed down to identify the bibliographical differences using the Daejeongjang(大正藏) copies of the reprinted copy by Haeinsa Temple on 1089, the Gibokdogam copy reissued on 1315, and Boeunjang(報恩藏) copy of Jeungsangsa Temple(增上寺) of Tokyo, Japan published on 1581.
