ABSTRACT

This study analyzes on the Yegijipseol published by Sangjumok in Goryeo Dynasty. The major findings are as follows: (1) The Yegijipseol(禮記集說) is a book of commentaries on the Yegi(禮記). Written by Jin Ho in 1322, the book was first published by the House of Jeong Myeong Deok in 1328. This edition found its way into Goryeo, where it was re-engraved onto printing blocks in 1391 in Sangju-mok, Gyeongsang-do. (2) The Goryeo edition of the Yegijipseol was mentioned by multiple commentators including Lee Sung In, Park Ik, Lee In Yeong, and others. Among these names, Park Ik is a mistake for An Ik, who was confused with Park Ik. (3) Upon taking office as Governor of Gyeongsang-do (Gyeongsang-do Gwanchalsa), An Ik ordered the City of Sangju to create an engraved edition of the Yegijipseol, which took only five months to complete. A comparison between the Jeong Myeong Deok edition and the Goryeo edition clearly shows that the latter was re-engraved using the former as its original. (4) Two figures were directly involved in the publication of the Goyreo version of the Yegijipseol: An Ik, who was the Governor of Gyeongsang-do, and Lee Bok Si, who was the Magistrate of Sangju-mok (Sangjumoksa). An Ik oversaw the overall project, while Lee Bok Si led the actual publication efforts. (5) The Goryeo edition of the Yegijipseol held by the Goheung Museum has seal impressions that read “Donghodangjang (collection of Donghodang)” on the front and back. These impressions tell us that the book once belonged to a collection held in a place called Donghodang. The name suggests a connection to “Donghodokseodang”. (6) Books of commentaries on the Yegi written by Korean scholars include the Yegicheongyeonrok by Gwon Geun, the Yegidaemuneonrok by Seong Sam Mun and Sin Suk Ju, the Yegiryupyeon by Choi Seok Jeong, and the Yegibosu by Kim Jae Ro. These great works by Korean scholars were created based on Jin Ho’s the Yegijipseol.
