ABSTRACT

Sauigyeongheombang is a traditional Korean medical textbook based on experiential prescriptions made by Lee Seok-gan, Chae Deuk-gi, Park Ryeom, and Heo Im, as well as prescriptions and other previous literature. It is edited by Lee Eui-tae. Yakmulmyeong is a book of Korean transliteration of medicine names that were written only in Chinese characters. As such, it is a list of traditional medicinal ingredients used at the time. Sauigyeongheombang lists 299 types of medicinal ingredients in 14 categories, but it has only been used as a traditional Korean medicinal reference. This paper considers and compares various editions of Sauigyeongheombang to reveal the book’s effectiveness as a reference for Korean language studies, as well as a medicinal textbook. In conjunction with recent rise in the study of object names, the book assists with the research of modern Korean vocabulary.
