ABSTRACT

(1) The Honkokuzi early type edition refers to 6 editions printed in a wooden type by Niho and others at Honkokuzi temple in Kyoto for 32 years between 1595 and 1626. (2) The material of the type was wood. The type-making technique sufficiently shows script writing style and was highly refined. Its technical quality is upper-lower grade. (3) The typesetting technique shows evenly aligned lines of character trace vertically and horizontally. There are few skewed characters, and the saturation intensity of ink color is consistent. In case of edition frame, the vertex is closely adhered. The corrections are also precise. The technical quality is upper-lower grade. (4) The brushing technique shows variance in ink color across editions. The technical quality is barely upper-lower grade. (5) The quality of printing technique maintains upper-lower grade.
