AB - This paper studies and analyses Korean rare books preserved in Zhejiang Library of China. The collections categorized as Korean rare books include 218 titles and 1,120 volumes in Zhejiang Library.
The Zhejiang area was one of the regions where the culture of book collection was very active in China. Therefore book collection of Zhejiang library was also formed by the donation of Zhejiang region’s collector. And it has been confirmed that the Korean rare books in Zhejiang library was also originally a collection of books from the Zhejiang area’s collector. In addition, we also checked how they came to collect the Korean rare books.
Next, we conducted a bibliographic analysis of Korean rare books by subjects, publishing period, and edition. First, examining these by subjects, there are 25 titles and 129 books of Classics, 76 titles and 270 books of History, 42 titles and 296 books of Sciences and Arts, and 75 titles and 425 books of Literature. Second, by publishing period, they range from Changjinjip published in 16th century to Joseongohwaljapanseupyeop (Sample book of typo in Joseon period) in 20th century. Expecially most of the books were published in 19th century. Finally, analysing Korean rare books by edition, woodblock printed books are made up the greatest portion, whereas there exist 37 metal printed books and 34 manuscript ones.
In addition, the material features were reviewed around ex libris seals, books awarded to organizations or individuals by the kings of Joseon dynasty, and the handwritten record of collector Wang Xiu.
We hope that this series of investigations and research will be used as basic data on related research.
