ABSTRACT

The Examination for the Learned and Virtuous was one of the government service examination systems of Joseondynasty in which outstanding individuals were recruited based on recommendations. It was implemented in 1519 at the recommendation of Jo Gwnag-jo, and those who qualified were recorded in Cheon-gwa bangmok. Cheon-gwa bangmok was published twice during the Joseon dynasty. The first printed copy was produced by Noh Su-sin, but it is unfortunately not extant. A reprint was published in 1639 in Cheongju by Kim Yuk, but the extant copy currently at Yonsei University is defective. This Cheon-gwa bangmok is not cited much by researchers of the Examination for the Learned and Virtuous because it is not well known and only parts of it remain. It became possible to ascertain a more complete version of Cheon-gwa bangmok by supplementing missing its parts when eight woodblocks that were used in reprint were found recently in Cheongju. Based on that, this study investigates the implementation process of the Examination for the Learned and Virtuous and the unique recording method of Cheon-gwa bangmok.
