This study examined the history of Geochang, the figures of Geochang, and the collections of works printed by wooden movable-type and books of Geochang in order to grasp the historical and cultural context of the publication of books in Geochang, Gyeongsangnam-do. The Geochang area was the hometown of Queen Shin, Queen of Yeonsan-gun, and Shin, Queen Dangyeong, the queen of King Jungjong. Due to the lectures of Sung Confucianism by Geung-pil Kim and Yeo-chang Jeong, who are known as “Supodae Lectures”, academics were promoted in the Geochang area, and many talents were continuously produced. Representative figures of Geochang include Hun Im, On Jeong, and Jongseok Kwak. In the Geochang area, 12 Seowons were established from the mid 17th to the late 18th century. Among them, Dosan Seowon, Wangye Seowon, and Pochungsa were sacrificed, and only Pochungsa dedicated to General Sulwon Lee, who died while suppressing Musinran, was not destroyed. Among the collections of works that were engraved in the Geochang area and possessed bookplates, the Serial Collection by Song Byeong-seon was engraved in Geochang area. It can be seen that the academic tradition in the Geochang region coexisted with the Yeongnam study and the Kiho study. The aim of this thesis is to explore some aspects and characteristics of 35 volumes of collections of works printed by wooden movable-type at Geochang county area in Gyeongsangnam-do Province. The author analyzed type of collections of works, their birth year and the family name of the author, the place and the year, and the publisher of the publication, and the printers of these different 35 kinds of the collections of works. The results are as follows: The collections of works demonstrate their forefathers’ academic competencies. The types of collections of works were divided into 3 types, Munjip(文集), Yujip(遺集), and Silgi(實記). Of the collections of works 82.9% were Munjip. The authors were local intellectuals. Of these authors 34% of authors were born in the 19th century. Nineteen lineage groups published collections of works at Geochang area. Seventy four percent of the publications were published from 1900 to 1949. In terms of place, most collections of works were published in the worshipping halls for their ancestors. Forty three percent of the collections of works were published within 100 years after the author had died. If the results of this study are compared with studies in nearby areas such as Sancheong, Hapcheon, and Hamyang, it is expected that the uniqueness of the Geochang area will be revealed more clearly.
