ABSTRACT

This study examines genre-based differences in book cover colors in the Korean publishing market. Book cover images of 4,645 titles were collected from bestseller lists of a major Korean bookstore from 2014 to 2024. Color features (Hue, Saturation, Value) were extracted using Python-based image analysis, and statistical analyses including descriptive statistics, Welch’s ANOVA, and clustering were conducted. The results show that most book covers are concentrated around the red or orange color range, while color tendencies vary significantly across genres. The cooking genre shows a distinctive orange-dominant pattern, whereas practical and exam-preparation genres tend to use a higher proportion of achromatic colors. In contrast, literary and children’s books frequently employ warmer colors such as red and orange. These findings suggest that book cover colors function as visual cues that convey genre characteristics.
