AB - Although reading has increasingly become a social practice through which people express their tastes and identities, most public library applications remain focused on search, borrowing, and curation functions. This study explored how social reading experiences could be implemented in public library applications through co-design workshops with 18 undergraduate and graduate students in South Korea. Participants preferred recommendations from others and the sharing of reflections during the book-selection and post-reading stages, whereas they prioritized individual immersion while reading and organizing their thoughts. They also favored low-intensity forms of connection, such as reading records, reviews, recommendations, and selective sharing, but perceived features that actively encouraged relationship building, including taste-based matching and book clubs, as burdensome. Based on these findings, this study proposes a preliminary design direction for public library applications that incorporates social reading functions for consulting reviews and recommendations, recording thoughts during reading, organizing reflections, and sharing them selectively. This design direction may support the planning and development of social reading features in public library applications and provide a basis for future research on how public digital library services can accommodate different levels of social connection across the reading journey.
