An Analysis of International Journal Citations to Korean Library and Information Science Journals

ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the extent to which research published in major Korean library and information science (LIS) journals is cited in international scholarly communication and to identify the articles, researchers, disciplines, and research topics through which it is selectively disseminated. To achieve this purpose, search results from the Cited Reference Search of Web of Science (WoS) were verified and cleaned by matching cited references with original reference lists and KCI article records. The final dataset comprised 978 WoS papers citing 957 Korean articles through 1,512 citation links. For articles published from 2002 to 2025, the average WoS citation count was 0.259, and 16.3% received at least one WoS citation, substantially lower than in KCI; differences among journals were also greater in WoS. Highly cited WoS articles were characterized by broadly applicable methods, internationally shared research topics, English-language publication, and participation by overseas researchers, whereas differences by acknowledgment type were observed only to a limited extent in KCI. WoS citations were driven largely by the international scholarly activities of Korean researchers, while also occurring through overseas research networks, and were used across LIS, computer science, and other fields, particularly in information science-related areas. This study contributes by showing that the diffusion of Korean research into international journals may occur selectively through particular topics and specific research networks.
