ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study investigated the impact of smartphone use in a seated position on cervical proprioception and postural balance. METHODS: Fifty-six participants (32 women and 24 men) were recruited for the study. The participants were asked to sit in a normal sitting position without using a smartphone, followed by sitting while watching a video on a smartphone. Cervical proprioception was evaluated using the cervical joint position error test (JPET), and the postural balance was measured using the multidirectional reach test. RESULTS: A significant decrease in cervical proprioception and postural balance was observed immediately after using a smartphone compared to before (p < .05). CONCLUSION: This study provides valuable information for clinicians and patients, emphasizing the importance of avoiding poor cervical posture because it can negatively impact neck proprioception and postural balance.
