AB - PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of combining sensory integration therapy with the CoTras-C program on visual perception and sensory-motor functioning in children with developmental delays.
METHODS: Twenty-eight children with developmental delays were assigned randomly to an experimental group (n = 13) or a control group (n = 15) for pre- and post-testing. Each group received 20 individual sessions, twice a week, lasting 40 minutes. The experimental group engaged in 10 minutes of CoTras-C followed by 30 minutes of sensory integration therapy, while the control group received 40 minutes of sensory integration therapy only. The K-DTVP-3 and BOT-2 were used to assess the visual perception and motor performance, respectively.
RESULTS: Post-intervention, the experimental group showed significant improvements over the control group in the K-DTVP-3 measures of eye-hand coordination (EH), figure-ground (FG), form constancy (FC), general Visual perception (GVP) and in the BOT-2 measures (fine motor precision, fine motor integration, manual dexterity, balance).
The within-group analyses revealed significant improvements across all areas for both groups (p < .05).
CONCLUSION: The combined intervention of sensory integration therapy and the CoTras-C program effectively enhanced the visual perception and executive function in children with developmental delays. This combined approach showed greater effectiveness in improving eye-hand coordination, while sensory integration therapy alone was more beneficial for enhancing the physical motor skills.
Future therapeutic strategies in occupational therapy for children with developmental delays may benefit from the positive effects of integrating computer-based cognitive rehabilitation programs, such as CoTras-C, alongside sensory integration therapy to support the improvements in visual perception and sensory-motor functioning.
