AB - PURPOSE: Children with cerebral palsy experience difficulties with selective muscle control, ataxia, and abnormal muscle tone that can result in secondary foot and ankle deformities. In this study, the arch height index (AHI), which can be measured easily using hand calipers, was used to classify the foot shape of children with cerebral palsy and compare the dominant and non-dominant sides. METHODS: This study measured the instep height and metatarsal head length in the sitting and standing postures with 20 children with cerebral palsy, and the AHI was calculated with the ratio of the instep height and metatarsal head length using a foot assessment platform. RESULTS: Classification of the foot shapes according to the AHI showed that the proportion of pes planus was high on the dominant and non-dominant sides in the sitting position, and the proportion of pes planus was high on the dominant and non-dominant sides in the standing position. The classifications of the foot shapes according to AHI were similar on the dominant and non-dominant sides. CONCLUSION: The proportion of pes planus was high in the dominant and non-dominant sides of children with cerebral palsy, regardless of the posture, and there was no significant difference between the two feet. These results provide a foundation for evaluating the condition of both feet and establishing an appropriate treatment plan during the therapeutic process for children with cerebral palsy.
