ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of gluteus medius strengthening exercises and stretching exercises on the iliotibial band stiffness, muscle strength, balance ability, and postural control of subjects with iliotibial band tightness METHODS: The study included 30 adults with iliotibial band tightness. The participants were divided randomly into two groups. One group performed gluteus medius strengthening and stretching exercises, while the other group performed only stretching exercises. The measurements were repeated after four weeks of training. As measurement methods, a manual muscle tester was used to assess the gluteus medius strength. The Y-balance test measured the dynamic balance. The Myoton was used to assess iliotibial band stiffness, and the Qualitative Analysis of Single Leg Loading (QASLS) measured postural control. RESULTS: The comparison within the groups revealed significant differences in the muscle strength, balance ability, and postural control ability in the Training Group but no significant differences in the Control Group. No significant difference in iliotibial band stiffness was observed in either group. The between-group comparison revealed significant differences in muscle strength and postural control ability, but no significant difference in balance ability and iliotibial band stiffness. CONCLUSION: Gluteus medius strengthening exercises have a beneficial effect on patients with iliotibial band tightness. This study suggests that gluteus medius training should be an essential part of the training programs for athletes and fitness enthusiasts to enhance performance and reduce the risk of injury.
