AB - PURPOSE: This study reviewed the necessity and future prospects of rehabilitation therapy in companion animals, focusing on its clinical effects and applicability in Korea. The aging of companion animals and the rise of musculoskeletal disorders, have made rehabilitation therapy an essential part of veterinary practice.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using international and domestic databases from 2000 to 2024. Eighty-six studies were selected and analyzed based on clinical effectiveness, intervention type, social impact, and international context.
RESULTS: Rehabilitation therapy had positive outcomes in postoperative recovery, osteoarthritis management, and neurological rehabilitation. Aquatic treadmill exercise was the most studied method, improving gait and reducing pain. Exercise and physiotherapy techniques, including balance training and electrotherapy, also showed benefits. In addition, rehabilitation services increased owner satisfaction and supported the growth of related industries. Although countries such as the U.S. and Europe have established certification programs, Korea still lacks standardized systems.
CONCLUSION: Companion animal rehabilitation is effective and socially valuable, enhancing the clinical outcomes and quality of life. Therefore it, academic foundations, standardized protocols, and institutional support must be developed to expand its role in korea.
