ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To determine if a mobile application–based wrist-stretching program improves upper-extremity disability and wrist-related outcomes in young adults with prolonged digital-device use. METHODS: This assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial enrolled 64 young adults (≥ 8 h/day digital-device use with wrist pain/discomfort) and allocated them to a mobile application–based stretching group (n = 32) or a usual-activity control group (n = 32). The intervention used the Bend application for four weeks (15 min/session, three sessions/week). The primary outcome was the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score. The secondary outcomes were the wrist range of motion (ROM), grip strength, and provoked pain during Phalen's and Finkelstein tests quantified by a visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS: The baseline characteristics were comparable. The stretching group showed a greater improvement in DASH than the controls (p < .001) and greater gains in the wrist ROM for flexion, extension, radial deviation, ulnar deviation, pronation, and supination (p < .001). The grip-strength change did not differ between groups (p = .334). The Phalen's test VAS decreased more in the stretching group than in the controls (p = .024), whereas the between-group difference was not significant for the Finkelstein test (p = .260). CONCLUSION: A four-week intervention improved the upper-extremity disability and wrist mobility and reduced Phalen’s-provoked pain in young adults with prolonged digital-device use.
