AB - The Korean Bioethics and Safety Act contains specific laws concerning the buying and selling of gametes, egg donations, and compensation for egg donors. This legislation helps to protect the human rights of those who use assisted reproductive technology (hereafter, ART). However, this article argues that the laws outlined in the Bioethics and Safety Act are insufficient to deal with all of the ethical and policy issues raised by the use of ART. Additional laws or policies are needed to establish good criteria for the number of embryos created in ART procedures, limitations (if any) on surrogate parenting and posthumous reproduction, the exact requirements of informed consent, and procedures enabling individuals to determine how their embryos or gametes are used.
