ABSTRACT

The primary purpose of this paper is to examine critically the recent paper of Professor Maeng. In addition, it aims to defend and refine the sentience theory, which says that what entities have moral status depends on whether they can have sentience. I show sentience is necessary and sufficient condition of having moral status; I criticize Professor Maeng’s claim that plants can have sentience. But it is claimed that some animals as well as plants don’t have sentience: this is a point which differentiate my sentience theory from Singer’s. His theory is criticized that vegetarian form of life cannot be maintained because we cannot help killing many sentient animals while plowing a field. My sentient theory of sentience is immune from such a criticism of impracticability.
