AB - In this paper, I argue that there is a coherency between Descartes’ views on perceptions or passions including phantom limbs of animals and human. First of all, according to Descartes not only human but also animals can have all the perceptions or passions and phantom limbs, because both of them have animal spirits and pineal gland. Secondly, phantom limbs, perceptions or passions can be conceived by human who has soul but cannot be by animals without their souls. Lastly, if all the perceptions or passions arise in brain, animals also can have nonconscious bodily self-awareness. There is no contradiction between Descartes’ views on perceptions or passions and phantom limbs of animals and human, because he allows human both conscious and nonconscious ones but allows animals only nonconscious ones.
