The Ethical Analysis on ‘the pure heart of a newborn babe’ of Zhu-zi

ABSTRACT

This paper is to consider the ethical meaning based on the analysis of Zhu-zi about ‘the pure heart of a newborn babe’. This ‘the pure heart of a newborn babe’ means that the mind can be equipped as a magnanimous man of the moral character as a proposition derived from Mencius. This ‘the pure heart of a newborn babe’ of Zhu-zi is the moral life, and the subject of moral practice as the primordial state of pure and unfeigned that newborn baby has. The subject of the moral life can maintain the ‘pure and unfeigned(純一無僞)’ state of mind through a study, complete ‘the mind of a magnanimous man’ through the moral perception. This ‘the mind of a magnanimous man’ means the moral subject that can morally and fully respond to the everything. The Zhu-zi Philosophy in this aspect can be called ontologically ethical theory. In addition, this ‘the pure heart of a newborn babe’ as a moral law without any conditions or intent in itself has as the moral obligation that should deserve the ‘Li(理)’ and the purity can be realized. This ‘the pure heart of a newborn babe’ in this aspect explain that the Zhu-zi Philosophy implies the ontologically ethical theory.
