ABSTRACT

Scholars who make an attempt to read Mencius’s philosophy as virtue ethics have some troubles to get around the misreadings and the overinterpretations because they rely on the simple comparison leaning against formal and external similarity between the two. We try to correct these misunderstandings in this paper. Mengzi tried to present fundamentally a macroscopic and universal theory of ethics, and in processing of its justification showed himself as a deontological realist which affirms human beings having a priori and universal goodness in nature, not a psychological subjectivist simply. this being so, we think there are considerable differences between Mengzi’s ethical theory and virtue ethics.
