ABSTRACT

This paper critically examines the claim in Leibniz’s two writings on justice that justice belongs to the necessary truth. First of all, I introduce ‘two writings on justice’, which are not so known Leibniz’s political philosophical work. And in order to examine his claim that justice is necessary truth, we examine the distinction between the truth of reason and the truth of fact presented by him. And through the proposition that “right can not be unjust” I will look at Leibniz’s argument that justice is the necessary truth with a formal basis. Here it should be noted that Leibniz distinguishes between rights and laws. It also explains what it is to see justice as a contingent truth and then what is happening, from this the meaning of the claim that justice is the necessary truth is highlighted. Finally, through this study I will examine the meaning of the concept of ‘moral necessity’ and suggest that the notion of justice has both moral necessity and metaphysical necessity, so that Leibniz’s moral philosophy can be viewed as a moral deontology.
