ABSTRACT

Thomas Reid rejects the philosophical system, so-called ‘the way of ideas’, which uses idea as the intermediary between mind and external object. According to the theory, we can perceive external objects only through ideas. However, Reid thinks otherwise. According to Reid’s direct realism, we can directly perceive external object without the help of any mental mediation.(i.e. ideas) in order to explain his direct realism, Reid uses a sign theory; sensation naturally signifies the quality of external object and at the same time signifies(suggests) perception of it. however, there has been a critique about the role of sensation in Reid’s direct realism; since sensation is almost identical with idea, Reid’s explanation of direct realism is failed. Against such a claim, we can say that sensation is not identical with idea, since Reid’s sensation is just a modification of mental states which do not have its mental object. Moreover, even if sensation mediates between external object and perception, Reid’s direct realism can remain intact since the mediation is not cognitive, but causal one.
