ABSTRACT

This article aims to explore Georg Simmel’s interpretations of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche through his lecture notes, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. In this process, G. Simmel’s philosophical attitude and the principles of interpretation are expected to be mainly investigated. This is due to Simmel’s claim that the goal of his writing is to pursue the philosophy of the thinker, not just a description of the thinker’s philosophy. After all, Simmel’s discussion of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche is a detour to realize his philosophy. From this point of view, this article will focus on how the two thinkers’ philosophies have been incorporated into the Simmel philosophy, rather than the well-known Schopenhauer and Nietzsche philosophy itself. In addition, in this article, the relationship between philosophy and time, which is always raised, will be related as the main viewpoint. This is because philosophy must naturally make efforts to respond to and reflect on the tendencies of the intellectual history of the time. This is not irrelevant to the effort to reflect on the meaning and goal of philosophy today. In this direction, the world of thought of the three philosophers who represent the philosophy of life will be fully illuminated.
