This paper attempts to describe proverbs of kinship, which were collected in a traditional gentry village of Korea. It has three distinctive characteristics in dealing with proverbs. One is to describe 40 proverbs which are actually used in a small speech community. Another is to deal with proverbs of kinship domain, which are not usually the subject of serious studies in paremiology. The third is to understand the meaning of proverbs in terms of their rich and total cultural contexts. In short the paper is an ethnographic approach to kinship proverbs which are actually used in a rural Korean village.
