ABSTRACT

A Hermeneutic Inquiry into the Stereotypes of Native Canadian Teachers. Asian Journal of Canadian Studies, 27(2), 105-126. This study investigates the perceptions of native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) about Korean English education and life in Korea. The theoretical background is understanding of native speakerism and NESTs' identities as an English language teacher. Six Canadian teachers participated in a conversation with one of the researchers as a dialectic activity. The data from the conversation were analyzed on the basis of Gadamer's hermeneutics perspectives of historically effected consciousness. Three NESTs' perceptions were found: NESTs' positions in Korean education, Korean education culture, and living culture in Korea. The findings show that they regard themselves as professional educators, assume the superiority of their education culture to Koreans, and live in-between Korean and Canadian cultures. This study suggests how NESTs can understand cultural differences between Korea and Canada and reduce the conflicts that they have.
