AB - In this study, we adopted an onomasiological approach to analyze the Korean past tense, moving from meaning to form. We identified and catalogued the forms that express the past; various forms were used to express the past. Some of these forms were due to differences in syntactic construction, while others showed differences in aspects or modality.
We examined whether the meaning of 'past' could be further subdivided.
In representational lexical semantics, a semantic field is established to identify sub-meanings belonging to the same concept. In this paper, we attempted to establish sub-meanings of the past. The results of subdividing the meaning of the past, excluding the meanings of aspect and modality, are as follows: Simple Past: -eoss-, -eosseoss-, -eun, -deon. Discontinuous Past: -eosseoss-, -eossdeon. Past in the Past: -eosseoss-, -eoss-. Past of Perception Time: -deo-. Counterfactual Past: eoss-, -eosseoss-(protasis), -eoss-, -eulgeol(apotasis). Past Recognition of Past Facts: -eossdeo-
