ABSTRACT

This study emerged from a critical examination of the tendency to oversimplify the complex emotional relationships between K-pop fans and the wider K-pop culture—ranging from affinity and love to identification and respect—by reducing them to mere fanatical emotional connections. In response, the study conducted open-ended surveys with K-pop fans to collect detailed descriptions of their emotional relationships. These descriptions were categorized using the consumption value square framework and analyzed through a semiotic approach to evaluate the emotional relationships between South Korean K-pop fans and K-pop culture. The results of the study categorized the emotional relationships between K-pop fans and K-pop culture into 16 distinct types. These categories were further classified into four consumption value categories based on the consumption value square: practical value, utopian value, critical value, and ludic value. Additionally, four emotional relationship types derived from these consumption values were subdivided into engaged, respectful, self-loving, and attached relational types. This classification aids in understanding the nature of the emotional relationships between K-pop fans and K-pop culture, as well as the corresponding fan attitudes and behaviors associated with each type.
