ABSTRACT

This study uses Mel’čuk’s Lexical Functions to examine the refunctionalization of general verbs in French medical collocations. The data were drawn from PARHAF anatomopathological reports and from French-for-specific-purposes medical communication materials. The analysis addresses both the general meanings that these verbs retain and their specialized uses. Oper–Func functions describe symptom experience and examinations, while Real accounts for treatment and medication. The Oper₁/Oper₂ indices distinguish semantic actants, and administrer un médicament and injecter de la morphine are analyzed as CausReal₁. The standard function Involv represents general lesion–tissue relations, while narrower relations require the non-standard functions Infiltration, Franchissement, AntiFranchissement, and Détection. Refunctionalization thus extends beyond semantic shift to encompass the selection and specification of general verbs within specialized actantial and collocational configurations. Terminologicity is not inherent in lexical units but emerges from their participation in the conceptual and combinatorial relations of specialized discourse.
