ABSTRACT

This research was done to understand the meaning and nature related with overcoming short stature among those whose heights are short. The research objects were six short stature children who were able to communicate and agreed to participate in the research. The data collection period was three months from April to June 2013. The research methods this research used were analytic and phenomenological methods. The essential themes in the experiences to overcome short stature were extracted from the four existential beings such as body, relationship, time, and space which help revealing meaning dimensions as the basic structure of experience, and there were seven themes: my body which should endure, change of my body, my small body, reestablishment of relationships, living together and enjoying together, finishing shot, and trial to escape. Nursing intervention which can reduce anxiety and fear related with having to he shot to overcome short stature is required. And those children should be given psychological support to enhance the lowered pride caused by the comparison of their heights with those of tall friends and improve their self-esteem. They should also be helped to have just standards on their bodies. This research has significance in the sense that it is the first research to find out essential meaning related with the experiences of overcoming short stature among school children in lower grades.
