ABSTRACT

This study attempts to investigate the effects of emotional dissonance of firefighters on cynicism and provide useful policy implications in order to help them overcome cynicism and improve their public services. Using variance and regression analysis, this study analyzed the data from 297 firefighters working in Busan Fire Service Headquarters. The results of this study are as follows. First, emotional suppression has a positive effect on cynicism about people and organization whereas emotional acting has a negative effect on cynicism about people and organization, which is true for the entire workers as well as the only field workers. Second, according to the analysis of the administrative workers only, it was found that emotional suppression has a positive effect on cynicism about people and organization, while emotional acting has no significant effect. This study suggests that we should provide counseling or psychotherapy services for firefighters experiencing emotional suppression and improve legal and institutional frameworks to address the problem of cynicism among public sector workers.
