ABSTRACT

With a growing demand for railroads and the local government’s desire to attract railroads, the expansion of railway facilities is inevitable. This study used Visual-MODFLOW to evaluate the impact of construction of the Jungnyeong tunnel as the part of the Dodam-Yeongcheon double-track railroad project on underground water environments in the upper Sobeaksan area. The Jungnyeong tunnel construction project was divided into seven steps, for each of which the discharge level of groundwater level as well as groundwater level were analyzed to calculate the range of the impacts of construction. It is found that the amount of discharged groundwater increases and the groundwater level decreases as tunnel digging begins. As tunnel digging was completed and the grouting proceeded, however, the amount of discharged groundwater decreased and the groundwater level returned to the initial level before construction. The findings suggest that the groundwater problem in the Sobaeksan area due to the construction of the Jungnyeong tunnel would be minimal.
