ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of social support on the quality of life among disaster victims in one-person households. This study used the data from the 2nd Disaster Victims Panel Survey collected by the National Disaster Management Research Institute in South Korea. The results of data analysis for 1,659 victims who experienced natural or social disasters were as follows. First, most of the disaster victims in one-person households include vulnerable groups such as the poor, the elderly and women. Second, the levels of social support and quality of life among disaster victims in one-person households were lower compared to those in multi-person households. Third, social support had a significant effect on the quality of life for disaster victims in one-person households. This result confirmed the importance of social support for the recovery from disaster and suggested that a community-based program would be needed to improve social support and quality of life for disaster victims in one-person households who lack family support.
