ABSTRACT

This study aims at analyzing a relationship between socio-economic characteristics and electoral competitiveness of left parties in Seoul. This study argues that the left parties must be searching for a solution to increasing electoral competitiveness in constituency as well as proportional representative voting. Thus, we set up a hypothesis whether the socio-economic factors on which are the level of education, degree of real estate and characteristics of region have an effect on the rate of the number of vote and the electoral competitiveness of left parties. The statistical results show that the levels of education and degree of real estate have not statistical significance except for the characteristics of region. However the candidate of New-Progressive Party one of the left parties was second placed at Nowon-III district in Seoul of the 18th general election. This case shows that the recognition of left party and candidate has an effect on the electoral competitiveness. This study implies that the strategy to enhance the electoral competitiveness of left parties should increase the recognition of left parties and candidates as well as the reform on electoral system.
