ABSTRACT

This is an exploratory research on the effects of overseas volunteering by university students. In recent years, overseas volunteering of university students has rapidly increased, but there is hardly any research done to explore its implication and effects. This analysis is based on the survey data obtained from the A university students who participated in its overseas volunteering programs in January or July of 2011. The effects of overseas volunteering are measured by three indices: improved global citizenship, improved personality, competence development. The result shows that overseas volunteering affects improved global citizenship most, followed by improved personality, competence development. The result also shows that the most significant predictor for improved global citizenship is individualistic-instrumental motivation among other variables. It implies that overseas volunteering of university students even with strong individualistic-instrumental motivation can be conducive to global citizenship.
