ABSTRACT

The relationship between political resistance and violence can be classified into three categories : ethical denial of violence, political denial of violence, and embrace of violence in politics. The first is argued by Thoreau, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr., the second by Arendt, the third by Hobbes and Marxists. And the first two views seem to be the theoretical foundation for non-violent civil resistance. On this basis, a claim for a vicious cycle of violence is supported by the theories of international politics and psychology. Recently, the argument that nonviolence resistance is more efficient is defended by empirical researches, and a variety of strategies and practical action plans have been suggested and exercised. This theoretical background would be helpful for the understanding of the candle light protest of South Korea in 2016.
