ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to conceptually summarize the definitions and main characteristics of online volunteering and to empirically find the characteristics of online volunteers' socio-demographic and volunteering activities through comparison with offline volunteers. In this study, online volunteering is defined as a method of volunteering that is performed partially or entirely based on the Internet. The analysis data are 3,668 volunteer data of secondary data carried out by the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs in 2015, of which 15.3% are online volunteers. As a result, it was found that male and teenagers, high school students and general office workers were more likely to participate in online volunteering than women and housewives and those over the 60 old age people. No significant difference was found between the metropolitan and small cities and rural areas. Online volunteer activities are more in the arts / sports / religious areas than face-to-face service areas. The average volunteer hours of online volunteers are not different from those of offline volunteers. But on the average number of activities and overall satisfaction, online volunteers were lower than offline volunteers. Based on the results of the analysis, we suggested a program developing that can participate in a relatively short period of time and focusing on the professional needs of the institution rather than face-to-face service for targeting the internet accessibility and online activity-friendly classes. And the necessity of management for sustaining support and ties. In addition, we suggested follow up analysis using by propensity score matching method of online volunteers and offline volunteers, and their effect on volunteer service satisfaction of online volunteers.
